[00:11] >> Just one act of crazy obedience. [00:14] So, Nehemiah did what he knew best. He [00:18] prayed. [00:19] >> Praying, hearing God, and doing what he [00:21] says. [00:22] >> Through every obstacle from without and [00:24] within, Nehemiah and the people stood [00:27] strong again. [00:30] I am Dr. Eris Sorf. I was born and [00:32] raised in the heart of Israel. But I [00:35] never heard the gospel message until on [00:38] a journey abroad, my eyes were opened to [00:41] the Jewish Messiah. From that point, my [00:44] life has been dedicated to bringing this [00:46] gospel back to my people Israel, [00:49] equipping them to reach Israel and the [00:52] world. Together as Jews and Gentiles, we [00:55] are one in Messiah, one for Israel. [01:14] Behind me are the walls of the old city [01:17] of Jerusalem. Walls have surrounded this [01:19] place since ancient times for [01:22] fortification and defense. But they've [01:24] also served to set Jerusalem apart as [01:27] the holy city of God. Centuries ago, the [01:30] walls had fallen into disrepair. But God [01:34] gave a man named Nehemiah the vision and [01:36] the heart to rebuild. Prophets predicted [01:39] that Jerusalem would one day welcome the [01:42] Messiah of Israel. So for Nehemiah, this [01:46] wasn't just another building project. [01:48] Building the walls was preparation for [01:50] the Messiah's coming. The value wasn't [01:53] in the bricks. It was in the prophetic [01:55] destiny to welcome the eternal king. [01:58] Today, we look at the challenges [02:01] Nehemiah faced as he was about to [02:03] complete the work and finish the wall. [02:06] We'll see how his convictions gave him [02:08] momentum to cross the finish line. As we [02:12] examine Nehemiah's anchoring values, [02:14] we'll ask, "What are your values?" as we [02:18] continue to walk the walls with [02:20] Nehemiah. [02:23] The walls were almost built. Nehemiah [02:26] had defended his people against outside [02:28] attacks. He had maintained order and [02:31] God's law within his ranks. The finish [02:34] line was in view. [02:37] This is the point where we might feel [02:39] like we're in the clear. The testing is [02:42] over. We can just coast until the end. [02:45] But Paul tells us, "Be careful when we [02:48] think we stand, lest we fall." With [02:51] Nehemiah, the enemy of God's people was [02:54] going to make one more attempt to try [02:56] and stop the vision. But Nehemiah would [02:59] not let his guard down and trip up at [03:01] the end. He had a set of values, [03:04] convictions that guided and focused him. [03:07] They would keep him from veering off [03:09] from the finish line when the pressure [03:11] was on. Let's look at how Nehemiah's [03:13] values guided his decision-making. He [03:16] writes, "Now when Sunbalat and Tobaya [03:19] and Gisham the Arab and the rest of her [03:21] enemies heard that I had built the wall [03:24] and that there was no breach left in it. [03:27] Sanbalat and Gisham sent to me saying, [03:30] "Come and let us meet together." But [03:32] they intended to do me harm. [03:36] We just want to meet. That sounds [03:38] innocent enough. After all, Nehemiah was [03:41] the governor of Judah. He was supposed [03:43] to take highlevel meetings like this, [03:45] right? I'm sure the work would go on if [03:48] he just left for a little while just to [03:51] listen to what these men had to say. But [03:54] Nehemiah had discernment to know what [03:56] was important and what was a trap. Four [03:59] times they sent to him urging him to [04:01] meet. Nehemiah didn't budge from his [04:04] post. He sent a message back to his [04:07] enemies. I am doing a great work and I [04:11] cannot come down. Why should the work [04:13] stop while I leave it and come down to [04:16] you? [04:17] You see, the vision God gave him was [04:19] non-negotiable. There was nothing those [04:22] men could say that would make him [04:24] compromise on finishing the wall. [04:26] Meeting them would be a waste of time. [04:28] Nehemiah kept his eyes on the main [04:31] thing. [04:33] So, what's our main thing? The first [04:36] value that will empower us to cross the [04:38] finish line is to keep our eyes on [04:41] Yeshua. If we get distracted by [04:43] secondary matters, it will trap us. It [04:46] will take us in a direction God never [04:48] directed. Yeshua is the center. And [04:52] whatever his spirit has directed as our [04:54] part in his purpose, do it. [04:58] Nehemiah was totally focused and [05:00] committed to his task. His eyes were on [05:03] God and the call to rebuild. He refused [05:06] to be distracted or trapped. He could [05:09] discern between a crisis he needed to [05:11] address or a distraction that would slow [05:14] down the work. [05:17] How focused are we on our vision and [05:18] calling? There will always be things [05:20] that will try and stop our work. But as [05:23] Nehemiah knew, there are some things [05:25] that are non-negotiable in our faith and [05:27] vision. Some things we will not [05:30] compromise and it's a waste of time to [05:32] argue about it. I'm sure it was [05:35] uncomfortable to keep refusing meetings [05:37] with those highlevel officials. But like [05:40] Nehemiah, we must be committed to [05:42] prioritizing God's work and staying on [05:45] track. We need to keep our eyes on [05:47] Yeshua and the vision he's called us to. [05:52] So after refusing to talk, Sanbalat, [05:55] Israel's enemy, sent Nehemiah a message. [05:59] It is reported among the nations that [06:02] you and the Jews intend to rebel. That [06:04] is why you are building the wall. And [06:07] according to these reports, you wish to [06:09] become their king. And you have also set [06:11] up prophets to proclaim concerning you [06:13] in Jerusalem. There is a king in Judah. [06:16] And now the king will hear of these [06:18] reports. So now come and let us take [06:21] counsel together. Another attack of the [06:24] enemy, not with swords, but with words, [06:28] with slander and threat. You are [06:30] planning a rebellion. We've heard the [06:32] rumors. Meet with me or I'll tell the [06:35] king. Maybe now Nehemiah would feel like [06:38] he needed to go and set the record [06:40] straight. But he had another value, [06:42] another compass that led his actions. [06:45] Don't listen to the voice of the enemy. [06:48] He didn't argue. He didn't leave the [06:50] work to meet with his accusers or [06:52] respond to them point by point. No such [06:56] things as you say have been done, for [06:58] you are inventing them out of your own [07:01] mind. [07:02] In other words, enemy, what you say is [07:05] false. You made it up. After Nehemiah [07:09] refuted the enemy's lies, he prayed. But [07:12] now, oh God, strengthen my hands. [07:17] Here in Israel, our nation faces [07:20] accusation every day. Throughout the [07:23] wars and struggles, we have been accused [07:25] of genocide and apartheid. Since the [07:28] beginning of the October 7th war, we [07:31] have had false accusations and lies [07:33] thrown at us before we could even bury [07:36] our dead or mourn our nation's greatest [07:39] tragedy. But if we at One for Israel [07:42] used all our time, energy, and [07:45] resources, arguing against every false [07:48] claim, we would lose focus on our [07:50] primary calling to bless Israel with the [07:53] message of Yeshua. On top of the [07:56] pressure on our nation, our ministry [07:58] also deals with liel and slander from [08:01] those who oppose the gospel. [08:03] But like Nehemiah, we don't need to [08:06] spend all our energy screaming back. We [08:09] can do what he did. Refute the lie and [08:11] draw near to God. As James says, resist [08:15] the devil and he will flee from you. [08:18] Draw near to God and he will draw near [08:20] to you. When the accuser talks to you, [08:23] don't listen. Don't stop the work. [08:26] Resist. Draw near to God and keep [08:29] building. [09:32] Nehemiah's work on the walls of [09:34] Jerusalem was almost completed and his [09:37] enemies were attempting a final barrage [09:40] of attacks. They used slander and [09:42] intimidation to try and stop Nehemiah [09:45] and the people from finishing. But [09:47] Nehemiah's values kept him focused on [09:50] the vision. Now the enemy was about to [09:53] use a new kind of attack. Not only [09:56] intimidation from without, but fear, [09:59] rumor, and betrayal from within. [10:02] Nehemiah soon found out that there was a [10:05] spy within his ranks. [10:08] A fellow Israelite approached him, [10:10] Schmaya. He claimed to be not only a [10:13] friend but also a prophet of God. Shaya [10:17] told him a rumor that his enemies were [10:20] coming to assassinate Nehemiah and they [10:22] might be there at any minute. He urged [10:24] him to hide inside the temple for [10:26] protection, the sanctuary of God. Sounds [10:29] like spiritual wisdom, right? [10:33] There was a problem. The temple was a [10:36] place where only a Levite could go, and [10:38] Nehemiah was not a Levite. Doing what [10:41] the so-called prophet told him to do [10:44] would be a violation of God's word. It [10:47] may have sounded like good sense and [10:49] spiritual wisdom, but in reality, it was [10:52] a response of fear and disobedience. [10:56] Sometimes under pressure we might think [10:58] we need to go against God's word in [11:01] order to solve a problem that the ends [11:04] justify the means. But Nehemiah was led [11:07] by another value in his life that kept [11:10] him going in the right direction to [11:12] serve with courage no matter what. When [11:15] he followed this foundational [11:17] conviction, he had clarity to know that [11:19] he wasn't called to hide but to build. [11:23] and he realized that this man who came [11:25] to him was not a friend and not a true [11:28] prophet. He writes, "I understood and [11:31] saw that God had not sent him, but he [11:33] had pronounced a prophecy against me [11:35] because Tobaya and Sanbalat had hired [11:38] him. For this purpose, he was hired that [11:41] I should be afraid and act in this way [11:43] in sin and so they could give me a bad [11:46] name in order to taunt me." Shaya was a [11:50] spy paid by the enemies of Israel. They [11:54] planned a deadly attack combination, [11:56] fear of harm and temptation of safety. [11:59] They hired someone who seemed like a [12:02] friend and prophet. Someone who claimed [12:05] to hear from God. He repped the fear and [12:08] temptation in spiritual language to [12:11] entice Nehemiah to disobey God. But fear [12:14] that sounds like wisdom. Words that [12:17] sound like prophecy, they can never take [12:20] the place of obedience to God and his [12:23] vision. So I was born and raised in Iran [12:25] as a Shiite Muslim. I loved God as a [12:28] young boy and I always wanted to serve [12:30] him and to love him. When I was 16 years [12:33] old, something happened to me that it [12:34] changed my life. I was going to my [12:36] cousin's wedding. Some of my relatives [12:38] gave me a ride and they had some [12:41] alcohol. I didn't. And I was in the car [12:43] and I was so excited to go and suddenly [12:46] as we are on the way there's a [12:48] checkpoint. They pull the car over, they [12:50] smell the alcohol and they took all of [12:51] us out. They took us to confinement, [12:54] took all our clothes off bare naked. [12:56] They start putting cold water on us and [12:58] they start beating us with these big [13:00] thick cables and they were mocking us [13:02] and laughing at us. They throw almost 50 [13:04] of us in a small room. We were choking. [13:07] I was so angry. I was feeling [13:09] humiliated, hatred toward the people who [13:12] torture me unjustly in the name of Allah [13:15] for something I hadn't even done. So he [13:18] took us to the court with shackles on [13:21] our hands and our feet and I sat before [13:23] a judge was a moola and he began to [13:25] judge us based upon Islamic laws. My [13:28] family found some connections and they [13:31] paid some bribe. They actually released [13:33] us and we had to just pay a fine. But [13:35] that was the beginning of a long [13:36] journey. I began to question Islam. [13:38] Islam that I was loving and serving. [13:42] What kind of religion is this? That [13:43] there's so much injustice. I saw so much [13:45] bad things in the Quran. For example, [13:47] surah 9 vers 2930 Muhammad said that [13:50] kill those who don't believe in Allah [13:52] and in his messenger. So imagine all [13:55] these years old propaganda in the [13:57] school. We heard bad things about [13:58] America, bad things about Israel. We [14:00] heard evil things about Jews and [14:02] Christians. And suddenly my eyes are [14:05] being opened that this is not from God. [14:07] A God who made this beautiful universe. [14:10] The flowers and the birds and these [14:12] beautiful rivers and mountains. This God [14:15] could not be this cruel. [14:17] Shortly after that many things happened [14:19] in my life. I lost my father. My father [14:21] passed away. As a result I dropped out [14:23] of a school. I left all my friends. I [14:25] was isolated. And I was so broken, so [14:28] hopeless. And I was crying out to God. [14:30] God, if you're real, who are you? [14:33] So then when I was 19, I heard the [14:36] gospel for first time. Our power was [14:39] out. I had a radio that was working with [14:41] battery. So I turned this radio because [14:43] I was sitting in this dark room. And [14:45] then I came across a channel and [14:46] somebody was talking about that he was [14:49] going to commit suicide to hang himself. [14:52] And on the way he heard this beautiful [14:54] music and he followed that sound of [14:57] music and he arrived to this church and [15:00] he heard the good news of the gospel and [15:02] his life changed. It was a glimpse of [15:05] hope that began to shine in my heart. [15:07] But nothing changed. Shortly after that [15:09] I heard again that Jesus Christ is a son [15:12] of God. That he came that he died for me [15:15] on the cross as a sacrifice. And then 3 [15:18] days later he rose from the dead. and if [15:21] I believe in him, I'll be saved." I [15:22] said, "That's a bunch of baloney." I [15:24] rejected the whole thing. I said, "How [15:26] could God have a son? God doesn't have a [15:28] wife." I could not comprehend that that [15:30] God would have a son and he would come [15:32] and die for us. But one week later, I [15:34] was so depressed and so sad and [15:38] everything seemed dark and hopeless. And [15:41] I heard the message again. So that day, [15:43] I had nothing to lose and very [15:45] skeptical. I said, "Jesus, I do not know [15:48] you. I was told you're a prophet. Now I [15:51] hear you're the son of God. I don't know [15:53] who is telling the truth. I don't want [15:54] to be a victim of religion again. But if [15:57] it's true, I want you to show me. And [15:59] the moment I say that, the heat went [16:01] through my hand. I began to cry and [16:04] weep. It's like somebody put his hand in [16:06] my heart and yanked out all that hatred [16:08] and anger and bitterness and depression [16:11] because I hated the people who torture [16:13] me unjustly. That hatred turned to [16:16] compassion. And I was so full of joy. so [16:19] full of love. I went to my mom's house. [16:21] My mom saw me and she said, "What [16:23] happened to you?" I said, "Why?" She [16:24] said, "Your face is shining." I told my [16:26] mother that I um became a Christian. I [16:29] accepted Jesus in my heart. And she [16:31] didn't have a negative reaction. And she [16:33] was sick for many years. She had a pain [16:35] that the doctor said you have to have [16:37] surgery and she had so much pain. I had [16:39] this confidence that if I ask anything [16:42] in the name of Jesus, he will heal me. [16:44] So I prayed for my mother and instantly [16:46] pain left my mom. She never had the same [16:48] pain, same problem ever again and she [16:50] was suffering for years and Jesus Christ [16:53] healed her. So I downloaded only the [16:55] four gospels and I began to read I think [16:58] I read the four gospels in 5 days. I was [17:00] so glued to this computer and as I was [17:03] reading the first five chapters of [17:04] Matthew made me cry because I saw these [17:07] words that I had never heard before. [17:09] Love your enemies and pray for those who [17:11] hate you and spitefully use you. Imagine [17:13] for all those years we would go to the [17:15] shrines of dead imams and we would pray [17:18] to these dead bones crying out to Allah [17:20] to Muhammad for answer and not even once [17:23] Allah answer our prayer but the moment I [17:26] call on the name of Jesus I felt this [17:28] love I felt his power and it just he [17:31] showed up in my room. [17:35] My name is Ramin Parsa and I am one for [17:38] Israel. [17:42] The attack of the enemy can be [17:44] frustrating, especially when he uses [17:46] people that we as believers are called [17:49] to love. We may be tempted to seek [17:51] revenge, but even this can be a [17:53] distraction. When Nehemiah was attacked, [17:56] he likely desired justice against his [17:59] enemies, but another value guided him so [18:02] that he didn't waste his energy on [18:05] revenge. He knew that vengeance belongs [18:08] to God. So Nehemiah did what he knew [18:11] best. He prayed. [18:14] Remember Tobaya and Sunbalot, oh my God, [18:17] according to these things that they did. [18:21] It's okay to desire justice when we are [18:23] wronged. But we need to entrust it to [18:26] God. Our values hold us to trust God [18:29] with everything. The vision, the people [18:32] we lead, and even our enemies. Nehemiah [18:35] put it all into God's faithful hands. [18:38] And we can trust the judge of all the [18:40] earth to do what is right. Today we are [18:43] witnessing a spiritual awakening in [18:45] Israel unlike anything we've ever seen. Call now and join us in [19:39] prayer for Israel. [19:47] 52 days after they began, Nehemiah and [19:50] the people of Jerusalem finally finished [19:52] the wall. through the enemy's attack and [19:56] discouragement, times of correction, [19:58] times when the work slow down and sped [20:00] up. Through every obstacle from without [20:03] and within, Nehemiah and the people [20:06] overcame, and Jerusalem stood strong [20:09] again. The people were faithful to the [20:12] end, and the work was completed. [20:14] Nehemiah writes, "And when all our [20:18] enemies heard of it, all the nations [20:20] around us were afraid and fell greatly [20:22] in their own esteem, for they perceived [20:25] that this work had been accomplished [20:27] with the help of our God." When they [20:30] finished, fear fell on the enemies and [20:33] nations that surrounded them. Those same [20:35] enemies that were trying so hard to work [20:38] against the vision. Why? because they [20:41] finally recognized that God was with [20:44] Israel. When we live according to [20:46] God-given values, we can walk out our [20:49] God-given vision. And just like with [20:51] Nehemiah, God will bless your work. [20:54] People around will know that the Lord is [20:57] still God today. The blessing of God on [21:00] your life is evangelistic. [21:02] Great success is not just for yourself, [21:05] but to testify to others of God's [21:08] faithfulness. [21:10] We're in the studio with our own Dr. [21:12] Seth Postel, dean at our Bible college. [21:16] He has some amazing insights and real [21:19] life examples in what it looks like to [21:21] walk out a vision and continue to see it [21:24] grow. Shalom, Seth. Thank you for coming [21:28] uh to chat with me again. You know, [21:30] we've been working together for very [21:32] closely for the past 15 years, and our [21:35] beginning was very humble. We're just [21:37] reminiscing about sharing offices and [21:39] whatnot. [21:39] >> That's right. I remember you sitting in [21:41] it looked like you were sitting in an [21:43] economy class rather than an office, but [21:46] it was we were only on one floor. We had [21:48] the upper floor, I remember, was just it [21:50] was a mess. It was rubble. There are [21:53] very few Messianic organizations in [21:56] Israel that actually own property or [21:58] that own buildings. And so, you know, [22:02] how was that for you? Because I heard [22:04] that, you know, when you were [22:05] considering buying this place, you were [22:08] people were trying to talk you out of [22:09] it. What what happened there? A couple [22:12] years before that, [22:14] um, God spoke to me very clearly and he [22:17] told me to buy a building. Now, I know [22:20] nothing nothing about real estate and uh [22:24] so I didn't know what to do. I didn't [22:26] know how how to even go about it. And I [22:27] just started calling realtors because I [22:30] didn't know what to do. And it was [22:32] pretty comical how God has guided me as [22:35] someone that has absolutely no idea and [22:37] no resources either. But um it really [22:40] was miracle after miracle. And um you [22:43] know, we bought this building and there [22:45] were several people that came over [22:46] again, well-meaning brothers. I don't [22:49] think they meant anything, you know, [22:50] they I think they just spoke their mind. [22:52] And uh it's a very humble commercial [22:54] building here, just for people to know. [22:57] Starting 2012, [22:59] the place was packed. Remember, we just [23:02] did not have enough classrooms, offices. [23:06] And so we just started in 2012 [23:10] to ask God every year, remember, to lead [23:13] us to our next stop that will be [23:16] dramatically bigger and allow us to do [23:18] many, many more things. We made offers [23:20] several times where people refused to [23:23] sell us property because we were [23:25] followers of Yeshua. But then a couple [23:27] of years ago, we we finally, you know, [23:29] God led us to the right spot and we [23:31] zeroed in on a on a property. And so we [23:34] are in preparation to building, we're [23:36] waiting for permits to build a much [23:38] bigger center that uh you know will [23:40] allow us to do much greater things [23:42] hopefully. [23:43] >> So it's interesting because you're [23:44] talking about this kind of crazy step to [23:47] buy this building, but you did something [23:49] else that was really out of the box. You [23:52] built a television studio. [23:53] >> Oh yeah. [23:55] >> Where did that come from from? And how [23:58] could you summarize the fruit of that [24:00] crazy decision? I'm not one that often [24:03] says God told me it. I don't usually use [24:06] that term very much, but God told me to [24:09] build television studios. So, I called [24:11] the architect and said, "You need to [24:13] change the, you know, the upper floor [24:14] and you need to to create space for for [24:17] a television studio." Then, we had [24:19] several people, some of our college [24:20] graduates that, you know, had background [24:22] in media and advertisement. They came [24:25] over and we started doing those very [24:27] simple testimonial videos and it just [24:30] caught on fire. I mean, it just became [24:34] wildfire in Israel and it's been like [24:37] that for the past 14 years. So, you [24:40] think about the fruit [24:43] of just one act of crazy obedience, [24:47] an act of irrational obedience, an act [24:50] of not knowing, okay, God, I heard you [24:52] to do it. How many people have seen the [24:54] gospel through the videos? How many [24:56] people have come to faith? How many [24:58] people have been influenced and [25:00] motivated, encouraged? I don't even know [25:02] what are the numbers of total views of [25:04] all of our content today. I I don't even [25:06] know. I think it's close to a billion. [25:08] >> It is. [25:09] >> And this all began because you [25:12] >> Well, God had a crazy idea. [25:15] >> God God gave you this idea. But again, I [25:17] think just the story of I think so much [25:20] of the story of of one for Israel is [25:24] praying, [25:27] hearing God, and doing what he says [25:30] >> and obeying. Yeah. And I think that's [25:31] the key. [25:32] >> Well, Seth, thank you so much. It's been [25:34] so much fun to reminisce about what God [25:37] has been doing and is doing in our [25:39] midst. And for you, our viewers, we pray [25:42] for you, that God will speak to you very [25:45] clearly, that you will listen and that [25:47] you will obey him as he has great and [25:51] wonderful plans for your life. Nehemiah [25:55] left a legacy. Not only do we have his [25:58] inspirational stories to learn from, but [26:00] we can still see today some of the [26:03] physical walls built under his watch. [26:06] Jerusalem was nowhere near its former [26:09] glory. But as God had told Zerubbabel [26:12] years earlier, "Do not despise the day [26:15] of small beginnings." These very gates [26:18] would welcome the King of Kings. God [26:21] used Nehemiah to pave the way for [26:24] Israel's revival and the first coming of [26:27] the Messiah. Legacy is something that [26:30] continues when we're gone. It's not [26:32] something you can get by cutting [26:34] corners. It's the result of a faithful [26:37] life before the Lord. Will you be [26:39] faithful to complete the work God has [26:41] given you? [26:44] The walls of Jerusalem were completed. [26:46] Nehemiah had done what he set out to do. [26:49] But what about those living within those [26:51] walls? They needed order and leadership. [26:54] But they also needed something so much [26:56] more. There was a new task ahead of [26:59] Nehemiah to build Jerusalem. Not just [27:01] physically, but spiritually. [27:04] Next time we will ask, "What is your [27:07] vision?" as we walk the walls with [27:09] Nehemiah.
