In 2022, Israel's Interior Ministry changed procedures restricting work and residency rights for grandchildren of Righteous Among the Nations to only minors. Recently, Israel's district court overturned this change, allowing adult grandchildren to obtain work and residency rights in Israel again.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, hundreds of Ukrainian refugees arrived in Israel, many of whom were descendants of Righteous Among the Nations. The Interior Ministry used this influx as justification to restrict the procedure to only minor grandchildren, implementing the change unilaterally without parliamentary approval.
After four years, Israel's district court ruled the 2022 restrictions unlawful and retroactively invalid, restoring adult grandchildren's rights to live and work in Israel. Eligible applicants who were previously denied can now reapply and obtain legal work status in Israel, potentially including their families and minor children.
