The Nazis, their fascist allies, and antisemitic collaborators across Europe tried to destroy Jewish life. They failed. Standing inside Budapest’s magnificent Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, I’m reminded of the extraordinary history of European Jewry. This architectural masterpiece witnessed the flourishing of Jewish civilization, followed by the horrors of the Holocaust, when Nazis, Hungary’s fascist Arrow Cross, and other antisemitic political movements and local collaborators participated in the persecution and mass murder of Jews. Yet Jewish life endured. Today, as antisemitism rises again, this gem of European Jewry stands as a testament to Jewish faith, courage, survival, and renewal. Our history is not only about what was done to us. It’s about everything we’ve built, everything we’ve overcome, and everything we continue to fight for. Am Israel Chai. 🇮🇱✡️ #JewishPride #Budapest #JewishHistory #EuropeanJewry #AmIsraelChai
