The Armenian Genocide killed 800,000+ people — and Turkey has denied it for over 100 years. Here's what actually happened in 1915, and why it still matters today.
The Ottoman regime marched 1.2 million Armenians into the Syrian desert with no food, no water, and soldiers ordered to brutalise them. Around 800,000 perished. Another 200,000 died in concentration camps. 200,000 more were forced to convert to Islam. The Assyrian and Greek Orthodox populations of Anatolia suffered a similar fate. Over a century later, Turkey still refuses to call it what it was.
