Transcript [00:03] Shalom. [clears throat] So if the [00:06] chauffar is like an alarm for the soul, [00:10] what is God trying to say to us at this [00:14] time? We are we are at this time right [00:17] before my favorite holiday actually um [00:20] which is Wilshshire or better known in [00:22] the word as the feast of trumpets. And [00:25] today we've got the readings for this [00:28] feast which actually falls the falls on [00:32] Friday night and the and the celebration [00:34] on Saturday. So it's a really uh special [00:37] holiday this year. The readings are [00:40] Genesis 20 21-34 [00:44] and numbers 29 1-6. [00:48] The haftar portion prophets are 1st [00:50] Samuel 1:1 through 2:10 and the new [00:54] covenant portion is Luke 227-20. [00:59] I want to start in numbers because [01:01] that's where we see this uh holiday [01:05] written about. And here we are. We of of [01:10] course also see this in Leviticus [01:11] chapter 23. I'm in the vid in numbers [01:15] chapter 29 verse one. Now in the seventh [01:19] month on the first day of the month you [01:23] shall also have a holy convocation. [01:27] You shall do no laborious work. It will [01:30] be to you a day for blowing trumpets. [01:34] You shall offer a burnt offering as a [01:37] soothing aroma to the Lord. So that is [01:42] happening on the first day of the [01:44] seventh month. And then if we go right [01:46] on to uh verse 7, it says on the 10th [01:49] day of this seventh month really is when [01:52] we would be celebrating Yom Kipur. So [01:57] it's like back to the question, you [01:59] know, this is a holiday for the blowing [02:03] of trumpets. God is trying to get our [02:06] attention. So what is he trying to say [02:08] to us? We know that this holiday is [02:11] leading us up to Yom Kipo. It's leading [02:14] us up to the Day of Atonement. I believe [02:16] that God is trying just to get our [02:18] attention to cause us to examine [02:21] ourselves and see if we are walking in [02:23] his ways and if not to correct our [02:26] course and to call out on God to to [02:29] forgive us and to help us and and and to [02:33] draw us closer to himself. I want to [02:36] look at um Genesis 21. [02:41] Now what this port this this particular [02:44] uh portion has in common with the [02:46] prophets portion is it's both both of [02:48] these are about a woman who was barren. [02:51] And of course we know that Abraham and [02:54] Sarah for so long wanted a child. And [02:57] Abraham was praying for a child. I'm [03:00] sure Sarah was praying in her heart for [03:02] this child as well. And then we get to [03:05] chapter 21 and this is what we see in [03:10] verse one. Then the Lord took note of [03:13] Sarah as he had said. And the Lord did [03:17] for Sarah as he had promised. So Sarah [03:21] conceived and bore a son to Abraham in [03:24] his old age at the appointed time of [03:28] which God had spoken to him. Abraham [03:31] called the name of his son who was born [03:34] to him whom Sarah bore to bore to him. [03:38] And so we see that they had been waiting [03:42] for this answer from the Lord and God [03:45] did hear and God did answer. That brings [03:49] us to the prophets portion today which [03:51] is in uh 1 Samuel starting in chapter 1 [03:55] and really a story that is so similar. [03:58] And here we have Kana who has been [04:01] barren. So let's start in chapter 1 [04:03] verse one. Now there was a certain man [04:06] from Ramat Sofim from the hill country [04:09] of Ephraim and his name was Elana the [04:11] son of Yohham the son of Elihu the son [04:14] of Tou the son of Suf and Ephraimite. He [04:18] had two wives. The name of one was Kana [04:22] and the name of the other Pineina. And [04:24] Panina had children, but Hana had no [04:27] children. Now this man would go up from [04:30] his city yearly to worship and to [04:32] sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shilo. [04:35] And the two sons of El Ki and Pinhas [04:38] were priests to the Lord there. When the [04:41] day came, the Elcana sacrificed. He [04:44] would give portions to Pineina his wife [04:47] and to all her sons and her daughters. [04:50] But to Kana he would give a double [04:53] portion for he loved Kana. But the Lord [04:57] had closed her womb. Her rival, however, [05:00] would provoke her bitter bitterly to ir [05:02] irritate her because the Lord had closed [05:04] her womb. It happened year after year. [05:07] As often as she went up to the house of [05:09] the Lord, she would provoke her. So she [05:12] wept and would not eat. Then Elana her [05:15] husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you [05:18] re weep? And why do you not eat? And why [05:23] is your heart sad? Am I not better to [05:26] you than 10 sons?" Then Hana rose after [05:31] eating and drinking in Shilo. Now Ellie [05:33] the priest was sitting on the seat by [05:35] the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. [05:38] She greatly distressed prayed to the [05:41] Lord and she wept bitterly. [05:46] She made a vow and said, "Oh Lord of [05:48] hosts, if you will indeed look on the [05:51] affliction of your maidservant, but will [05:54] give your maidervant a son, then I will [05:57] give him to the Lord all the days of his [05:59] life, and a razor shall never come on [06:02] his head." Now it came about as she [06:04] continued praying before the Lord that [06:06] Ellie was watching her mouth. As for [06:08] Hana, she was speaking in her heart. [06:11] Only her lips were moving, but her voice [06:13] was not heard. So Ellie thought she was [06:16] drunk. Then Ellie said to her, "How long [06:18] will you make yourself drunk? Put away [06:20] your wine from you." But Hana replied, [06:23] "No, my lord. I am a woman oppressed in [06:26] spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor [06:30] strong drink, but I have poured out my [06:34] soul before the Lord. Do not consider [06:37] your maidservant as a worthless woman, [06:39] for I have spoken until now out of my [06:41] great concern and provocation. Then [06:44] Ellie answered and said, "Go in peace, [06:46] and may the God of Israel grant your [06:49] petition that you have asked of him." [06:52] She said, "Let your maid servant find [06:56] favor in your sight." So the woman went [06:59] away and ate, and her face was no longer [07:03] sad. [07:04] Then they rose early in the morning and [07:06] worshiped before the Lord and returned [07:08] again to their house in Rama. And El [07:11] Kana had relations with Kana, his wife, [07:14] and the Lord remembered her. It came [07:18] about in due time after Hana had [07:22] conceived that she gave birth to a son [07:25] and she named him Shuel saying because I [07:29] have asked him of the Lord. So we see in [07:32] both of these stories two women whose [07:35] hearts were really broken crying out to [07:38] the Lord asking God to hear their prayer [07:41] and give them a baby. And in due time, [07:44] the Lord heard and answered their [07:46] prayers. And then this is what Hana [07:49] prayed after God gave her her answer. [07:52] It's in 1 Samuel chapter 2. Then Hana [07:56] prayed and said, "My heart exalts in the [08:00] Lord. My horn is exalted in the Lord. My [08:04] mouth speaks boldly against my enemies [08:07] because I rejoice in your salvation. [08:11] There is no one holy like the Lord. [08:15] Indeed, there is no one beside you, nor [08:21] is there any rock like our God. And as [08:24] we go into this new year, um we know [08:29] that there's a lot of things that are [08:32] uncertain. There's a lot of things that [08:33] look really scary, but we know that our [08:37] God is a rock and we know that there is [08:40] none like him. We know that he is a God [08:44] who hears and answers prayer. As we c [08:48] celebrate the feast of trumpets this [08:50] year and we hear that chauffar going [08:53] off, let us take pay attention to what [08:56] God is trying to say to us. He's trying [08:59] to get our attention. Let's give him [09:01] that attention. Let's humble ourselves [09:04] before him and seek him with all of our [09:07] hearts. Hag shalom.
