How do we follow God when the path ahead is unclear?
In Parashat Beha’alotcha (Numbers 8:1–12:16), we discover how God led Israel through the wilderness with His light, His presence, and His faithfulness—and how these truths point us directly to Yeshua, the Light of the World.
Parashat Beha’alotcha teaches us what it means to follow God faithfully through seasons of uncertainty. As Israel continues its journey through the wilderness, the Lord instructs His people about light, service, guidance, trust, gratitude, and humility.
The portion begins with the lighting of the menorah. Aaron is commanded to raise up the lamps so they shine before the Lord. This beautiful image points us to Yeshua, who declared, “I am the Light of the world.” Just as the menorah illuminated the Tabernacle, Yeshua shines into the darkness and leads His people in truth.
The Levites are then set apart for service. Their dedication reminds us that serving God is not merely a duty but a privilege. Through Yeshua, believers are called to lives of worship, service, and faithful obedience.
One of the central themes of this portion is God’s guidance through the cloud. Israel learned to move when the cloud moved and remain when it remained. Whether the cloud stayed for a day, a month, or longer, the people were called to trust God’s timing. In the same way, Yeshua leads His followers today, teaching us to trust His direction even when we do not understand the full journey ahead.
The wilderness also reveals the condition of the human heart. The people begin to complain and long for what they left behind in Egypt. Instead of focusing on God’s provision, they focus on what they think they are missing. Their story reminds us that gratitude protects the heart from bitterness and unbelief.
The portion concludes with Miriam and Aaron speaking against Moses. God responds by affirming Moses’ humility and leadership. Scripture describes Moses as very humble, more than any other man on earth. This points us to Yeshua, who perfectly demonstrated humility, obedience, and submission to the Father’s will.
