In a separate incident, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards attacked a United States military base in Kuwait using three unmanned aerial vehicles. The United States has not announced a direct military response, raising the question: is Washington holding back for diplomacy — or preparing for something much larger? According to reports, a major strike against Iran had already been approved — but then came the warning number that changed the calculation. The United States may have used nearly 80 percent of its THAAD interceptors and nearly half of its Patriot interceptors during the war with Iran, raising major concerns about missile-defense readiness if the confrontation expands. Dramatic negotiations are taking place in the Gulf. Iran is demanding oversight over ships entering and exiting the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States and regional countries are rejecting Iranian control and transit fees. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reporting progress toward reopening Hormuz for free navigation — but Israeli officials warn that the core issue of enriched uranium remains unresolved. Qatar’s role is becoming more important and more complicated.
