About Israel and the Jewish world.

In just a short while, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror will begin. This is a day that touches every soul in Israel. There is hardly a family here that has not felt the pain of loss. The restoration of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel—our ancestral homeland—has come at a heavy price. The Land of Israel was promised to the people of Israel forever. Yet throughout history, many have tried to prevent the fulfillment of that promise. Already in the days of the return to Zion, some 2,500 years ago, we read: “Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, they became very angry… But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night… Those who built on the wall… worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.” (Nehemiah 4:7–9, 16–17) Then as now, the rebuilding of our nation in our land has faced constant opposition from those around us. Yet it has never stopped us from building, growing, and achieving. Still—the cost is painful. Israel’s founding leaders made a profound decision: before we celebrate our independence, we must first remember the price paid—and still being paid—for our freedom. My prayer is that no more names will be added to the list of the fallen. That we may dwell securely in our land, and celebrate our independence with a full heart—one of gratitude, meaning, and hope.
