To understand how the Palestinian cause became one of the most powerful political narratives in the world, we need to make one important stop in Moscow in the 1980s. In 1982, Mahmoud Abbas wrote his doctoral thesis in the Soviet Union, promoting Holocaust distortion and the antisemitic conspiracy that Zionists collaborated with the Nazis. It was later published as The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism. Abbas is not just another politician. He is the President of the Palestinian Authority, Chairman of the PLO, and a man the West has treated for decades as a partner for peace. Documents from the Mitrokhin Archive identified Abbas as a KGB agent in 1983, under the codename “Krotov,” meaning “Mole.” Think about that. The man leading the PLO was a KGB agent. For decades, the Soviets weaponized the Palestinian cause, repackaging antisemitism as anti-Zionism, anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism. Today, we see the same ideological framework in the Red-Green alliance between radical progressives and Islamist movements. The accusations have barely changed. Zionists are Nazis. Israel is the source of evil. Jews control governments, media and wars. What Soviet propaganda once spread through political organizations and universities is now amplified by social media algorithms, influencers and demonstrations across the West. The West has allowed itself to be overwhelmed by what I consider one of the most successful influence campaigns in modern history. The Soviet Union collapsed, but its propaganda survived, finding new allies, new technologies and new generations willing to spread it. The Palestinian conflict has become a global ideological weapon, exploited far beyond the Middle East. And the West is still struggling to recognize it.
